This rehabilitation and adaptive reuse project sensitively turned a sock manufacturer’s turn-of-the-century office building and production floors into an urbane boutique hotel and private club. May Hosiery Mills was established in 1908 and maintained a factory near a railroad terminal in South Nashville. The mill was among one of the largest employers in the city for much of the 20th century, manufacturing a million socks a week and supplying department stores and the NASA Apollo 11 crew, until ceasing operations in 1985.

The architectural design integrates a series of 1920s light industrial buildings, including salvaging some structures built without foundations,  into a cohesive whole. The private members’ club offers hotel guestrooms, dining and entertaining amenity spaces, a screening room, fitness center, co-working space and pool deck. A 40,000 SF exterior terrace features a courtyard centered around the neighborhood’s oldest tree. The rebirth brings vitality to Wedgewood-Houston by celebrating the grit, soul and glamour of Nashville’s past and future.
