1100 West Fulton Market was designed in 1922 by M. Ronneberg and served as home to the Murmann & Karsten Poultry Company. The building is a contributing structure to the landmarked Fulton-Randolph Market District. HPA rehabilitated it into a new showroom and retail space for Herman Miller. This adaptive reuse of the existing two-story building included a new concrete structure, exterior glazing, and the addition of a third-floor roof deck with a 3,500 SF glass cube. A new five-story structure adjacent to the original seamlessly connects at the first and second floors.

Maintaining the authentic character and scale of the street drove the design, which honored architectural details through significant masonry preservation. Building systems, such as HVAC, lighting, sprinklers and conduits were meticulously arranged and coordinated to be aligned and equally distributed within the space to support changing showroom displays.

The project establishes a model for smaller businesses to locate self-contained headquarters outside downtown and connected to a walkable district.
