Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture (HPA) has received two 2016 Honor Awards from the Illinois chapter of the American Institute of Architecture.  Harper Court was honored with the Louis Sullivan Award, the top design prize for the year, while the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel received the Crombie Taylor Award for Preservation.

AIA Illinois annually sponsors the award competition that recognizes people and projects that epitomize the contributions of the architecture profession and the transformative power of design.

The Louis Sullivan Award, AIA Illinois’ highest state honor, was presented for the design of Harper Court, a multi-use commercial and retail development.  The award was presented by AIA Illinois’ Executive Vice President, Mike Waldinger, and President Rik Master at a ceremony held at Harper Court on October 28, 2016. Sophie Bidek and Megan Zack accepted the award on behalf of the HPA project team.

The Honor Awards jury, comprised of AIA Fellows from chapters across the country, described Harper Court as a “work of art,” and “catalyst for change,” with strong community connection elements. “It reinvigorates the life of the neighborhood. It has everything – mixed use, human scale, and interesting partnerships.”

HPA received a second award, the Crombie Taylor Award for Preservation, for the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. The Crombie Taylor Award recognizes a project that, through preservation and restoration, has enhanced the natural and built environments of a community.

The award was presented by AIA Illinois’ Executive Vice President, Mike Waldinger, and President Rik Master at a ceremony held at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel on October 28, 2016. Paul Alessandro, Jason Walejeski and Michael Hines accepted the award on behalf of HPA project team.

The AIA Illinois jury noted HPA’s strong adaptive reuse solution respects the club’s social history, ensuring that improvements are consistent with the original character of the building, and resulting in a “particularly impressive” and sensitive restoration.

This is the second time that HPA has been recognized with two Honor Awards in a single year. In 2013, the firm received the Louis Sullivan Award for Randolph Tower and the Crombie Taylor Award for Hairpin Lofts.
