Coming soon to Chicago’s North Side

May 1st, 2022

North Union is JDL Development’s ambitious transformation of a prime 8.1- acre parcel that will bring thousands of residents to nearly 2,700 homes constructed across a five-block-long site on Chicago’s Near North Side.

North Union is located on a site bounded by Oak Street to the north, Chicago Avenue and Chestnut Street to the south, LaSalle to the West, and the CTA Brown and Purple
line tracks to the west.

As the development’s master planner and architect, HPA is designing 14 new construction and adaptive reuse projects – a mix of low-, mid- and high-rise buildings and townhouses — that will ultimately offer thousands of residential units, 30,000 SF of commercial space and 2.5-acres of public parks and open green space. This bold vision was honed over three years, with close input from the Chicago Department of Planning and Development, local government officials, and community stakeholders.

Over the course of this multi-phased project, HPA will chronicle how we use placemaking strategies to craft a new dynamic, multifaceted neighborhood. We’ll share the historical context of the site, which was part of the Moody Bible Institute campus for more than a century. We’ll illustrate the design strategies that inspire the broad vision of the master plan down to the detailing of discrete buildings. And we’ll let you in on the Near North Side’s unique characteristics and best local places that drew HPA into relocating our studio to this vibrant and special Chicago area.
